How far would you go to surf perfect waves with no-one around? Matt Rode is a surfer and journalist who’s dedicated his life to this dream. He’s gone where very few surfers have gone before him, logging his findings in his hand-written “sacred scrolls,” which he’d never shared with anyone…until now. Last year, Matt decided to help guide some of the world’s best surfers to a handful of these ultra-special yet wildly fickle waves, crossing his fingers that he (along with Surfline’s ace forecast team) had analyzed the charts well enough to find them at their good to epic best. The result? Four far-flung adventures, some excellent pitfalls, countless tubes, many fish, some barbecues and so much more.
Diehard surf traveler and journalist, Matt Rode, had heard rumors of a certain wave. A machine-like lefthander, that on its day, funneled flawlessly for over 200 yards over shallow, live coral around a reef pass off an atoll somewhere in a sea of other atolls. Through his contacts on the ground and photos/vid he’d collected over the years, the time was now to pull the trigger on a very promising swell. Promising…but with locations this remote, always a risk.
Rode invited pro surfers Ian Crane, Brett Barley and Winter Vincent to see what some of the best surfers in the world could do with this left. And over two days of travel later, they found themselves at the translucent natural wavepool which had certainly turned ON.
Well…everyone but Brett Barley found themselves there. Missing a connection or two en route, Brett was stranded on an island halfway to destination. But after a couple harrowing boat rides that replaced a cancelled flight, jumped straight into the lineup and washed the travels off with eight hours of tube-time. The following few days served the crew countless barrels with no-one else out, a particularly close-call with the reef, and a bounty of fresh-caught fish (when they weren’t being stolen by the men in grey suits).
What are the odds of lightning striking twice? Diehard surf traveler/journalist Matt Rode came to this place three years ago, hunting the rumor of a perfect pointbreak. When he finally arrived, the wave simply wasn’t breaking. But on that same trip, Matt stumbled across a remote beachbreak setup that, for its size, was one of the best he’d ever seen.
Matt usually has reservations about revisiting a spot he’s already scored, maybe at its best. This time, he broke his own rule and invited a crew of pro surfers along for the ride — Brett Barley, Eli Beukes, Cory Lopez and Torrey Meister. While it wasn’t easy to convince them all to travel halfway across the world to surf a beachbreak, once they did arrive, they discovered something that blew them away. Day after day after day.
Swell charts, bathymetry models, and buoy data proves helpful to Matt and his crew. But other clues — like the sound of cowbells — really even out the score.
Patience is a virtue. Maybe you've heard that one before, but when it comes to getting the waves of your life, it's not just a cliché. Diehard surf traveler/journalist Matt Rode has spent years exploring and mapping the remote corners of the surfing world. This time, he invited fellow surfers Soli Bailey, Anne Dos Santos and Ian Crane to explore a beautiful, menacing right reef slab, with a lot more going on than it first appears. Seventy-two hours and four flights later, they'd beaten the swell into town...and the wait began. Until the last two days of the trip, when their patience paid off in the biggest and most glorious Maps challenge so far.
Remote. Off-grid. Uncomfortable. Far. This place was all that and more - a cold-water desert coast where the issue wasn’t so much whether there’d be swell, but whether there’d be too much swell. That, and staying warm.
Even for diehard surf traveler/journalist Matt Rode, who’s spent the last 20 years getting as far away from other surfers as possible, it was a solid call. For his travel buddies Jordy Smith and Soli Bailey, it was a chance to step away from the everyday, and stretch their skills in some increasingly epic surf zones. In “Where The Road Ends”, the crew drives for days into the desert, camping on remote bluffs under the night sky and waking up to waves they’d hoped for, but never expected. Even for such a well-traveled bunch, it’s a surf camping trip like no other.

“Travelers” are often pretentious. They like to make a clear and rigid distinction between themselves and “tourists.” Travelers like to think that by staying longer in a place, they are somehow more entitled than the average visitor. But they’re fooling themselves. Travelers are just tourists with dirtier luggage. And Nathan Fletcher, who’s never been one to front, knows: To thine own self be true.
